From 'Take Me To Church' To Dante's 'Inferno': Hozier On His Career So Far

Hozier got a lot of reading done over the past few years, and as a result his latest EP, Eat Your Young, and his forthcoming album, Unreal Unearth, both drew inspiration from one the 14th century's most iconic works of literature — Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy or Dante's Inferno.

The Irish singer-songwriter tells Q104.3's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke that while neither the EP nor the LP are concept albums, songs and sequences on both collections were guided by themes in the literature.

"Direction is definitely the word," Hozier tells the show. "The album is not tied to the literature in any way. I think it was important that the songs can just be the songs and let them do their thing. But the album is just arranged in its themes along what [Dante] imagined was these Nine Circles that his little character walks [through hell]."
