New Jersey Highway Sign Hacked, Vandalized With Lewd Joke

New Jersey Highway Sign Hacked, Vandalized With Dirty Humor

An electronic sign alongside Route 80 in Hackensack, New Jersey, was apparently hacked this weekend when it broadcasted a lewd suggestion to motorists.

Video posted to Facebook Sunday afternoon showed the sign on I-80 near Exit 65 flickering between a sexually suggestive message and a phone number, rather than the usual warning to Click-It or Ticket or be wary of icy conditions.

The electronic sign in question belongs to a state Department of Transportation contractor, reports

"Someone vandalized the portable variable message sign and changed the message," said NJ DOT spokesman Dan Triana. "NJDOT contracted the contractor as soon as we were notified and directed the contractor to remove the message and secure all boards, which was done shortly thereafter." reports the phone number listed on the sign went straight to an answering machine.

DOT officials say they reminded the contractor to lock the control boxes of all portable video signs to prevent vandalism.
