Movies: The Glass Castle, Good Time

“The Glass Castle”- based on the best-selling book by ex-NY gossip columnist Jeannette Walls- this is her story of growing up dirt poor in a 3 room house without water and electricity- raising her 3 siblings. Her dad was a genius and angry alcoholic. Her mom was more into her painting than parenting. There was what many would call abuse but also a whole lotta love. Oscar winner Brie Larson plays Jeannette. Woody Harrelson should be Oscar-nominated as her dad. Naomi Watts plays her mom. You’d think this was fiction- her life was so extraordinary.

Not everything in life is black and white. And our experiences shape who we become.

JANNETTE WALLS IS ON SONSTEIN SUNDAY AT 7AM

“Good Time”- Rob Pattinson totally breaks from Team Edward of “Twilight” fame with his best acting to date in the gritty role, playing a low level NYC criminal whose botched bank robbery leads to the jailing of his on-the-spectrum younger brother. This is the story of the one night he spends trying to set free his brother- taking him on a journey of NY’s underworld. It’s a breakout performance by Pattinson. Equally impressive: Benny Safdie, who plays his younger bro. Remember the name Safdie. Benny and his bro Josh co-wrote and directed “Good Time”, which is anything but for anyone in this film. Think young Martin Scorcese- two of them. Jennifer Jason Leigh is great (as always) and Pattinson’s girlfriend. You would want to trade lives with no one in this movie.

“Annabelle: Creation”- I didn’t see this one but it’s one of the better rated horror movies, getting 68% on Rotten Tomatoes.   Annabelle is a scary doll, by the way. That was one of my favorite “Twilight Zone” segments: “Living Doll”, with Telly Savalas. Hard to imagine anything topping that!!!!
