David Crosby had lots of complicated relationships in his life, but his affair with music was steadfast.

Croz died Thursday at age 81 after battling an undisclosed illness. A two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Crosby's career spanned more than six decades and included a wealth of classic recordings.

While David struggled with numerous health issues over the final decade-plus of his life, he stayed busy with music, recording three new albums in the past three years.

David's longtime friend, singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge, with whom he had two biological children, thanked him for "the gift of family. I will forever be grateful to him, Django, and Jan. His music and legacy will inspire many generation to come. A true treasure."

One of David's most important musical relationships was with his Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young bandmates.

Former bandmate Graham Nash was one of the first to issue a remembrance of David, despite their uneasy friendship.

"David was fearless in life and in music," Nash wrote. "He leaves behind a tremendous void as far as sheer personality and talent in this world. He spoke his mind, his heart, and his passion through his beautiful music and leaves an incredible legacy. These are things that matter most."

Stephen Stills, who was on speaking terms with David at the time of his death, issued a statement that addressed their ups and downs over the years.

"I was happy to be at peace with him," Stills wrote. "He was without question a giant of a musician, and his harmonic sensibilities were nothing short of genius. The glue that held us together as our vocals soared, like Icarus, towards the sun. I am deeply saddened at his passing and shall miss him beyond measure."

Neil Young addressed David's passing in a statement released Friday. While he and David did not speak for many years, Young emphasized that at a time like this, "I remember the best times!"

"We had so many great times, especially in the early years. Crosby was a very supportive friend in my early life, as we bit off big pieces of our experience together. David was the catalyst of many things."

Beach Boys mastermind Brian Wilson added that he was "heartbroken" to hear the news.

"David was an unbelievable talent — such a great singer and songwriter. And a wonderful person."

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour, who included Crosby and Nash on his Remember That Night live album in 2006, added that he would "miss The Croz more than words can say."
