Footage has come out of Col. Bruce Hampton collapsing during a concert Monday night celebrating his 70th birthday.
Hampton was rushed to the hospital where he died. TMZ posted the fan-filmed footage late Tuesday.
Witnesses say they initially thought Hampton collapsed during the encore as a joke. That reaction is completely believable watching the footage. The singer and guitarist goes from directing the band, and beckoning teenage guitar prodigy Brandon “Taz” Niederauer to the front of the stage for a solo to easing himself onto the floor on his stomach, where he stayed before the band and crew realized something was really wrong.
Live for Live Music wrote that it appeared at first as though Hampton was "falling at the feet of his youngest star" as Niederauer soloed.
Hampton is best known for his Hampton Grease Band from the 1970s and his Aquarium Rescue Unit in the 1990s.
The birthday concert featured Warren Haynes, Blues Traveler's John Popper, Phish's Jon Fishman, Chuck Leavell and special guests.
Hampton's family confirmed his death in a statement Monday via the Tedeschi Trucks Band Facebook page and asked for "respect and privacy at this difficult time."
