Smashing Pumpkins Recording New Album With Rick Rubin

Billy Corgan has revealed that three-quarters of the Smashing Pumpkins original lineup are in the studio with famed producer Rick Rubin.

Earlier in January, Corgan began dropping hints that he and former bandmates, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain, were back in the studio.

Over the weekend, Corgan revealed in an Instagram post that Pumpkins are indeed making a new record.

"[We] are currently in the studio with Rick Rubin," Corgan wrote the in caption of a portrait of himself. "But unless I show you a picture of Rick sitting Buddha-like at a mixing desk, you probably wouldn't know that."

Corgan has shared many photos of both himself and his bandmates from the studio via his Instagram account, though none of Rubin.

The frontman said in one post that he had "worked on" 17 songs at Village Recorder Studios in Los Angeles.

What Corgan has not addressed is the apparent exclusion of co-founding bassist D'Arcy Wretzky, who confirmed a few weeks ago to BlastEcho that she will not be reliving the good ol' days with her former band.

"My apologies to all of the Smashing Pumpkins fans out there who are excited about this oncoming reunion tour of the original members of the band," she said. "I know this is a huge disappointment for me, as well, but it’s not going to happen [with me]."

Rubin is a Grammy-winning producer who co-founded Def Jam Records. He's produced hundreds of hip hip, rock and heavy metal albums since the mid-'80s, including albums by AC/DC, AudioslaveBeastie Boys, Black Sabbath, Danzig, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slayer and many, many others.
