Here's the Only Day Job Scott Weiland Didn't Get Fired From

Stone Temple Pilots guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz say that while the band was writing its debut album, Core, in the '80s and early '90s, Scott Weiland happened upon a day job he genuinely seemed to enjoy.

In a recent interview with Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke for the 25th anniversary of STP's debut album, Core, DeLeo recalled how his brother Robert DeLeo and Weiland would often write songs together during downtime at work.

Robert worked at a guitar shop and Weiland worked across the a modeling agency, Dean explains.

"Scott happened to buy a car—he was the second owner of this car...Just brand new condition, garage kept, he bought it from an elderly woman—it was a '68 Chrysler New Yorker.

"Scott's job was to drive models to their shoots," Dean says.

"That was the one job he never got fired from," Kretz laughs. "He was a bike messenger, got hit the first day. It's like there's so many jobs that he just couldn't hold on to. That one, yeah he really cherished that one."

Despite the daily distractions, Weiland thrived in the job, and got a lot of music done in the process. When Weiland or Robert were on break, they would get together.

"They would sit out back and Robert had a big, big Buick Wildcat or something...and that's kind of where they say. You know the back seat in that thing was like a couch. So that's where they did a lot of the writing for that record."
