In a Japanese, school you’re supposed to take your shoes off and change into uwabaki, which are light slippers that you may have seen if you ever watched that third Fast & Furious movie Tokyo Drift.
Rather than lugging their uwabaki to and from school every day, preschools have cubby boxes where kids store their slippers overnight, and that's where we find a crime. At Gogasho Preschool in the town of Koga, a number of children’s slippers had been stolen during the night. The thief has struck multiple nights bringing the total number of victims to 13 children, now Uwabaki are not expensive, they cost a few US dollars a pair, so there’s not much money, to be made reselling them. The school contacted the local police, who decided to set up a surveillance camera, and just a few days later, they caught the culprit on camera.
A weasel was caught in the act, stealing the slippers. Now, we're not calling the thief a weasel cause he's stealing from children, it's an actual weasel that's been breaking into the school and stealing the slippers. Weasel’s fur isn’t thick enough to fully insulate babies from the winter cold, and this weasel is likely a mother using uwabaki to build a nest.
Now that the thief has been identified, no charges will be filed, on account of the fact that its a weasel and there's no such thing as weasel jail. For now the school has placed protective nets over the cubbies to keep the slippers safe.
