It's National Shawarma Day!

It's National Shawarma Day!

I know what you're saying to yourself, when the hell did shawarma get its own day? Well, a little bit of pop history can get you many things amongst them your own national day.

The Middle Eastern rotisserie method of cooking meats, includes lamb, chicken, and beef is something that's very recently commonly seen in cities and at food truck meets. Marinated with Mediterranean herbs and spices, the meat slowly cooks on a vertical rotisserie spit, and then is thinly sliced, grilled and placed in a pita wrap with a variety of toppings. The customization of this dish is a massive part of it's popularity, as people load it with fresh vegetables, cheese and special sauces.

Shawarma really got its boost, however after landing a mere reference in The Avengers movie, that lead to a small end credits scene, and now Shawarma is everywhere. Shawarma would find its way into a multitude of movies and tv shows and now one can hardly be in any heavily populated food space without finding the dish being made and a long line waiting to consume it.

Yes, shawarma took on a red velvet like popularity, but the dish is as old as the Mediterranean culture that it came from. If you're feeling especially hungry tonight, make a run to your local shawarma, place (let's not act like there's not one near you), or hit up your favorite food delivery service and enjoy your shawarma like The Avengers themselves.
