Scott Patterson won a generation of television watchers’ hearts when he starred as the grumpy but lovable Luke Danes on the 2000s-era hit show Gilmore Girls. But he had actually never seen any of the show’s seven seasons or the mini-series revival A Year In a Life. So he decided to start his rewatch podcast, I Am All In, to finally sit down and see what all the fuss is about. On this episode, he’s just started season two, and is quickly becoming obsessed: “I wanna binge the show and I can’t!” he complains to his producer, Amy. “I didn’t know how frustrating this podcast was going to be. I can only watch one a week!”
Fortunately, that means he’s willing to dive in and dissect every little piece of Gilmore goodness there is, which is great for superfans (like Amy). Plus, he gets to pepper in his own memories from the set; in the season two premiere, the entire town follows behind Lorelai and Rory as they walk to Luke’s Diner. Scott explains the choreography involved, plus the painstakingly difficult job of the script supervisor, who’s job is to make sure everything in every take matches; that means if Luke takes a blueberry muffin out of the toaster oven at a certain time, in a certain way, he has to match that action exactly each time they do the scene. “It’s tough,” he admits, but not as hard as being the script supervisor keeping track of all that stuff – especially when there are a ton of extras. They had quite a bit of turnover in that position: "They were like, ‘Get me out of here! It’s too much work!’” Scott jokes.
He and his producers Amy, Riley, and Danielle take the relationships in Gilmore as seriously as the most ardent fan; they have serious discussions about how Richard treated Dean during dinner, bringing up class and wealth as well as Richard’s lingering sense of disappointment with his daughter Lorelai’s choices. They admire Lorelai’s parenting skills and Emily’s straightforward talk with Richard. Luke’s coolness in the diner about Lorelai’s proposal from Max Medina is a “master stroke of psychology.” And they spend some time on each pop culture reference in the episode, plunging them into tangents about Frank Sinatra, All In The Family, F.
