Kirk Hammett And Fleetwood Mac Co-Founder Peter Green Are Collaborating

Peter Green Performs

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett is one of several musicians collaborating with Fleetwood Mac co-founder Peter Green on a musical project and a book.

Hammett and Green might be unlikely musical partners, but the two have been linked for several years over their mutual love of the guitar — particularly the 1959 "Greeny" Les Paul, which was Green's main guitar in the early days of Fleetwood Mac.

Known for its unique sound (often attributed to a pickup wiring "mistake"), Hammett bought the guitar in 2014 at the urging of Jimmy Page for a rumored $1 million and is often seen using it in concert with Metallica.

Hammett recently shared a photo of himself reuniting Green with his one-of-a-kind guitar at Green's home in southern England.

The photo prompted Rufus Publications to explain to Planet Rock that Hammett is among the guests contributing to an upcoming musical project of Green's, which also includes a book.

Hammett recorded "something very special with said guitar" at Abbey Road studios before meeting up with Green to talk guitars and music.

"The project Peter is working on with Rufus Publications is nearing completion and will be released later this year and will include several guest musicians playing on some unique recordings," the company added.

While Green has been happily retired for many years, his old band mate Mick Fleetwood recently organized an all-star tribute to Green's era of Fleetwood Mac set for February 25 at the London Palladium. The show's performers will include Christine McVie, David Gilmour, Billy F. Gibbons, Steven Tyler, John Mayall, Jonny Lang, Zak Starkey and Bill Wyman.
