How Girlpuppy Quickly Transformed From A Hobby To A Career

Becca Harvey's Sweetness, her second album as girlpuppy, marks a major shift in her career, creative process and personal life, as it's the first release built entirely on her own musical and lyrical ideas.

Speaking to Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke, Becca confirmed that Sweetness resulted from the breakup of a relationship with an ex bandmate. "It's very [Fleetwood Mac] Rumours," she confirmed.

In addition to representing a step forward as an artist, Sweetness also presents a new opportunity to get back on the road. Becca says playing live is the drug that turned girlpuppy from a pandemic-era hobby into a career.

"When I first started making music, it was in 2020, so I didn't even think I would ever play a show, and I was happy about that. Because I'm usually very shy and reserved. Horrible stage fright my whole life," she says. "When I was making music in 2020, I was like, 'Oh, this is the best because I don't even have to play a show.' I can just do this in my home and no one has to see me do it. And then the second I played my first show, it became my favorite thing of all."

Becca's first show was the release party for her 2021 debut Swan EP. And after that she was hooked.

"It sold out," she recalls. "I was so nervous. The whole week I would get nauseous thinking about doing it. And then second I started the first song, I was like, 'Oh, this is what I want to do my entire life.' It's the best feeling in the world."
