Andrew W.K. might be the kindest and happiest person in rock and roll, and that's why everybody loves him.
Every show Andrew W.K. plays and every song he releases is a celebration of the most positive, constructive aspects of life. Partying to Andrew W.K. isn't just getting drunk in public (though it doesn't exclude that entirely), it represents all that is good about life.
"It's a mindset that just basically says, 'Okay, we have a choice about how we approach life,'" he tells Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke. "There are a lot of unknowns, there are a lot of questions, there are a lot of potential doubts...But at some point you can decided that even if we don't have proof that life is good, we can decide that it is and we're gonna celebrate it."
"If we can celebrate Friday night because we're glad that the weekend is here, [If] we can celebrate holidays because we're glad of some special event, what about the special event of having the chance to exist at all?"
If you're surprised or put off at the breadth of Andrew W.K.'s knowledge of existential philosophy, take comfort in knowing he's still as goofy as ever.
Upon Clarke's request, the frontman brought along his newest toy: a custom-made ESP Custom Shop Taco Guitar, which he painted himself and unveiled on October 4, 2017, National Taco Day.
And Andrew W.K.'s spirit of inclusion even made it into the paint job.
"I tried to paint it so it could read as a soft, corn tortilla or a hard-shell corn tortilla that's been fried of course...so it's really open to interpretation."
Indicating the taco guitar's filling, he said, "If you're a vegetarian, than this is beans. And if you're a meat-lover then this is fresh, Angus, ground, seasoned beef."
Andrew W.K. will release his new album (his first in over a decade) in March of 2018. In the meantime, make sure to check out his new ESP Custom Taco Guitar in action on tour! Get all the dates here.
