Interview: Roadcase Royale Talk Worlds Colliding, Heart, Prince and More

If Roadcase Royale lacks anything at all, it's not heart.

The band is comprised of half of the last lineup of Heart, but it also came about thanks to the mutual love and respect of its two lead singers, Nancy Wilson and Liv Warfield

Wilson tells Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke that she became a fan of Warfield's after seeing her perform on late night TV in a band that included guitarist Ryan Waters

"I was like, 'Who the heck is that!?'" Wilson recalls. "The energy and just the whole presence. I was like, 'Let's invite them to play for us at the Hollywood Bowl for the two nights.' And that's when we came together and started talking about something else we could try to do. Because she wants to really rock and I love the funk."

But Wilson wasn't the first music legend who contacted Warfield after becoming a fan from afar. Prince hired Warfield as a background singer after being enamored with her cover of "Gimme Shelter."

"Honestly, [Prince] was just so inviting and so relaxed," Warfield says. "He just welcomed me into his home...He really supported me. He was very, very generous with his light, you know? And I'm just really thankful for that because I learned so much from him."

Roadcase Royale's debut album, First Things First, contains several great original songs, along with a few covers, including Heart's "These Dreams," which the band performed live in the studio for "Out of the Box."

"'These Dreams' is one that was always a big favorite of so many Heart fans," Wilson says. "But now it's a different way of saying the song because Liv and I share the song."
