Huey Lewis & the News might not be performing live again soon, but the band is following through on its promises of new music.
On Thursday, the beloved '80s hitmakers premiered their first new song in almost a full two decades, "Her Love Is Killing Me," from an upcoming studio album.
The new album — the band's first of new original material since 2001 — is still untitled, but it due out in 2020. Huey Lewis & the News' last studio release was a 2009 LP of R&B covers.
While the songs are new to most, Lewis himself clarified in a press release that many of them will be familiar to longtime fans, who've seen the News live in the intervening years.
"We were in no hurry with these song," the singer explained via a press release. "The more we road-tested them, the tighter they got, and I think we ended up with some of our best work."
"Her Love Is Killing Me" is an uptempo blues-rock number with an elastic backbeat and a hook that holds up with some of the band's best-known work. You can listen to it in the player above or here.
Lewis retired from performing live last year after being diagnosed with Meniere's disease, a rare inner ear disease that sometimes renders him almost completely deaf.
The singer has good days and bad, but the unpredictable nature of the disease's symptoms makes it impossible for him to schedule live shows.
Earlier this year, the singer described the depression he fell into after canceling tour dates with the strange condition, but also explained to the San Francisco Chronicle that he's not giving up finding treatment.
"I can do everything but what I love to do the most, which is a drag," he said in one interview this past winter. "It can get better; it just hasn't yet. I haven't come to grips with the fact that I may never sing again. I'm still hoping I'm gonna get better. They say a positive attitude is important."
