Journey's Neal Schon Reveals Disgusting Trick He Uses on All His Guitars

Journey mainman Neal Schon is one of rock's most well-respected guitar players. And as one of the greats, Schon has access to some of the best instruments ever made. And just like his mentor Carlos Santana, Schon has a long-time relationship with master luthier Paul Reed Smith.

PRS is known for producing stunningly beautiful instruments with even dreamier sound and playability. Schon's own signature models, the NS-14 and NS-15, will cost you upwards of $4,000 at retail. But even at that value, Schon's guitars aren't quite to his liking right out of the box. The guitarist recently revealed a trick he uses to further customize his instruments.

He slathers them in salami grease!

The revelation comes after a fan posed a very specific question to Schon via Twitter.

"Do u have your tech use anything on your fingerboards to give u the feel you like," asked Twitter user Dale Adams.

Schon replied, "I use Italian salami, for real," adding that he was inspired to do so by late great jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery.

"I wipe the fat grease up and down the fret board," he explained.

Schon's followers, a large portion of whom are guitarists themselves, were understandably stunned.

Others related their own, very different experiences performing with greasy fingers.

Then came some jokes...

Not to mention the economic implications...

Please note: these guitars are NOT vegan!

Indeed most players won't even touch their instruments without washing their hands first. Then one of the best goes and tells the world that no set-up is complete until he rubs salami grease on his fret board.

Rock 'n' roll is full of surprises...and, as we now know, salami.
