Wendy Dio insists the hologram technology that will put her late husband, Ronnie James Dio, back onstage this year is "great for the fans."
Wendy says her husband innovated throughout his career, so it makes sense for that aspect of his legacy to continue.
The singer's widow added in her conversation with the "Talk Toomey" podcast that Dio tried a similar gimmick in 1985 during his tour in support of his Sacred Heart album. They "were always trying to do new things and exciting things," Wendy says.
The Dio hologram debuted at the Wacken Open Air Festival last year to mixed reviews, with many fans feeling it seemed exploitative.
The show Dio's estate is putting together is expected to debut this fall; it will entail an eight-song setlist to be performed by the Dio hologram and former members of his band.
Wendy went on to describe the hologram project as a logical innovation in music, akin to the eight-track, the cassette and the industry's advancements in the digital space.
Dio maybe even have predicted this, Wendy says, recalling when he was once asked about retiring Dio suggested he might die onstage.
"Or if I don't, I'm sure Wendy will find something for me to do after."
