Steve Morse Doubts Deep Purple Members Are Truly Retiring

Steve Morse Says Deep Purple Is Not Retiring After Farewell Tour

While Deep Purple has refrained from making any definitive statements about its future beyond the current Long Goodbye Tour, guitarist Steve Morse says he plans to give retirement a try — as much as a lifelong musician can, anyway.

Morse says he believes his Deep Purple bandmates, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ian Paice and Don Airey will keep busy.

"For me, personally, it's a farewell tour," Morse said in an interview with Koztimes.com. "As for the other guys, I think they will still be playing, perhaps in other groups, special projects or as guests. I also plan to stay in music, but not so actively as now. But you do realize that, when the music for so many years is the most important place in your life, [it's] impossible in one day to abandon it. In general, I know that the guys are not going to retire. They would rather die onstage than in bed."

Deep Purple will return to the U.S. this summer in a five-week co-headlining tour with heavy metal legends Judas Priest.

If Morse is truly through with touring and ready to say goodbye to Deep Purple, that would allow for a seamless reunion with founding guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who has been open about his desire for a one-off reunion with his old band.

Morse, who succeeded Blackmore in Deep Purple in 1994, said last year that he thinks a reunion is a good idea, and he wouldn't get in the way of it happening.

"I think they'd all get a kick out of it if they could get past the psychological barriers," Morse said. "A lot of people would feel intimidated to have somebody come who's likely to play over them, standing in front of them and stealing the spotlight or whatever. But I thought, 'A lot of people would love to see this.'"

Morse replaced Blackmore in Deep Purple in 1994. Blackmore says the group is running out of time to do something.

"We're older and with the passing of [John Lord], you never know who's going to pass next," Blackmore said. "And it would just be a friendly get-together. But as you might know, in this business nothing works around friendship. It's all around money and business."
