Graham Nash on CSNY: "They're My Brothers and I Love Them Dearly"

Graham Nash says his former bandmates David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Neil Young are like family to him, but they're keeping their distance from one another right now.

"The truth is that they're my brothers and I love them dearly," Nash tells Q104.3 New York's Ken Dashow. "I do. I love Crosby. I'm not talking to him right now; you know, we're not talking to each other right now. But I love him dearly.

"I spent 45 years--almost 50 years of my life, making music with these guys. How could I not totally love them? However, when you're not getting on with your brothers, you know you have to take a break for a while."

Nash adds that he can't be sure when he and his former bandmates will come to terms, or if that will ever happen.

With four songwriters as prolific as those in CSNY, creatively the music was always something of a tug-of-war, Nash admits. He says he always thought the group's albums should contain an equal number of songs from each member, but that ideal didn't always play out.

"I write quicker than that," he says. "Crosby writes faster than that. Neil writes faster than all of us put together. So what you do with those songs if the band, whichever iteration it is, is not making records? You have to do solo stuff."

Nash and Dashow also discuss CSNY's longstanding activism with music, The Beatles' influence and how Nash picked up and left his home country and a successful band (The Hollies) to come to America and write songs with Crosby and Stills.

Fast forward to about the 1:52-minute mark for when Nash begins talking about CSNY's current status.

Nash's North American tour begins July 11. Get all the dates at his official website here.
