May 17, 1990, marks the last show drummer Chad Channing ever played with Nirvana. The next man up was Dave Grohl.
After recording on the band's debut album, Bleach, Channing decided to leave the band due to creative differences. In September of that year, Melvins guitarist Buzz Osbourne introduced Grohl to Nirvana.
Grohl auditioned and bassist Krist Novoselic later said he and Kurt Cobain knew within two minutes that Grohl was their new drummer. The rest was history, as they say.
Not too long after that, Nirvana played its first show with Grohl on drums at the Surf Club in Olympia, WA. Thanks to the magic of the Internet -- and some truly dedicated video editor -- you can see the entire 40-minute set above!
