U2 guitarist The Edge says the band decided to tour for the 30th anniversary of Joshua Tree after the results came in of the US Presidential Election.
He tells Rolling Stone that the band had just finished its upcoming album, Songs of Experience, and had a revelation about Joshua Tree and the parallels between the worldwide political situation in 1987 and what's going on today.
"The election happened and suddenly the world changed," Edge says. "We just went, 'We've got to give ourselves a moment to think about this record and about how it relates to what's going on in the world."
The Edge says U2 is still figuring out how it's going to perform its landmark 1987 opus, The Joshua Tree, during its live show this summer.
The album turns 30 years old on March 9, 2017. U2's tour is set to begin in May.
Edge confirmed that the band will perform all the songs on the album, but it's not yet clear if the set list will be in the same order as the songs on the album.
"The show might not necessarily start with Track 1, Side 1 'Where the Streets Have No Name' because we feel like maybe we need to build up to that moment," he says. "So we're still in the middle of figuring out exactly how the running order will go."
Joshua Tree includes huge U2 hits like, "Where the Streets Have No Name," "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."
Tickets for the US tour go on sale Tuesday, Jan. 17.
