Susanna Hoffs pokes fun at her romantic history and celebrates her romantic present (her marriage of 33 years to filmmaker Jay Roach) on her new album, The List.
The Bangles co-founder tells Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke that the album title is inspired by a real list of ex-lovers that she made many years ago.
"It was in a Filofax diary that I stumbled upon from a while back," Hoffs says. "I had cobbled together in pencil a list and there was certain measures of things, like there'd be a 1 or maybe a 2. ... It was how many times I hooked up with that person (laughs)."
While Hoffs has no plans to share the list publicly or name names, she has shown it to friends. Producer CJ Camerieri joked that it's a "good list" and a few of the entries surprised him.
"[She] described it as 'the good, the bad, and the really terrible,'" Camerieri added.
The list includes a number of other celebrities and creatives. Hoffs says it's not so much a document of her triumphs, but an index of lessons learned. The most important name on the list is the last one, Roach, whom Hoffs married in 1993.
"It took that list to get to him," she says. "I learned a lot along the way.
