Metric On The 'Act Of Faith' That Preceded New Album 'Formentera'

Almost 20 years into their career, Canadian rock band Metric decided it was time to make their own album their own way in their own studio.

Guitarist Jimmy Shaw and singer Emily Haines tell Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke that the band has been increasingly drawn to the rural territory north of Toronto in recent years. Not long ago they found an old converted church for sale and they decided to make a big move.

"We decide to move our studio from the city up to this church, and it's been kind of like a dream space of us. It's been pretty amazing," said Shaw.

Building a functioning modern-day studio takes a lot of time, money and engineering know-how. Doing it during a pandemic was an even bigger leap.

Haines added that, despite her reservations, she's learned to trust her bandmates' instincts over the years.

"Part of being a team, right, is we all have different strengths," Haines said. "What I bring to the table is definitely not related to wiring ... I was so nervous because it was a big move, it was a big purchase, it was a big buy. And Jimmy's like, 'It's gonna work. It's gonna sound amazing.' ...Then when we were getting drum sounds, we were getting results that are as good as we've gotten at Electric Lady and other studios that we've worked at that we love."

The result of those recording sessions in the new space is Metric's eighth studio album, Formentera, due out July 8. Watch the full conversation via the player above!
