Devora Addresses Origins Of Her 'Outlaw' EP, 'Goth Dolly Parton' Persona

If you're wondering how someone comes to identify as "the goth Dolly Parton," Devora points to her wild upbringing in the desert of Arizona, where the freedom to explore was juxtaposed only by the potential for lawlessness.

"My childhood was filled with a lot of strange people from a lot of different places," she tells Q104.3 New York's Out of the Box with Jonathan Clarke.

While Devora's aesthetic pits classic against counterculture, her music is more White Zombie meets Alice Merton. Her debut EP, Outlaw, is the product of a collaboration with New York-based producers Cass Dylan and Alex Aldi.

"I came to them with stories and lyrics and poems and the visuals — lots and lots of visuals. And they took that with me and we turned it into [this EP]."

The five tracks on Outlaw invoke a myriad of sonics, with lyrics treading bitterness, triumph, survival and all the inspiration therein.

Of her latest single, "Body Bag," Devora describes it as an cathartic embrace of a newfound grudge.

"It's definitely about a past relationship," she said. "At the time I wrote it I was so undeniably, over-the-top frustrated. I didn't even have it in me at that time to mince words or even make it sound poetic. It was just, 'I'm gonna put you in a body bag' (Laughs)."
