Phil Anselmo dedicated a recent performance of Pantera's "Slaughtered" to his late former bandmate, Vinnie Paul.
Anselmo has said few words publicly regarding Paul's death last month, with the exception of an Instagram post with no caption and a short video played during the drummer's public memorial service over the weekend.
In new fan-shot video from Anselmo's recent Baltimore, Maryland, show with his band Scour, the frontman appeared emotional as he introduced the Pantera deep cut in remembrance of Paul.
"This is one for Vince," Anselmo said as the band prepared to start.
Anselmo and Paul had a famously dicey relationship leading up to Pantera's 2003 break-up. The drummer even heaped some of the blame for Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell's 2004 murder on Anselmo, saying comments the singer made in the press about Darrell contributed to the disillusionment of the fan who attacked the guitarist.
While Paul had softened his criticism of Anselmo in recent years, he reportedly hadn't spoken to the frontman since Pantera's break-up. Anselmo displayed less animosity in return, having publicly hoped he and the drummer could reconcile. Earlier this year, Anselmo fondly remembered the camaraderie that followed his first gig with Pantera back in the '80s.
Anselmo's video message played during Paul's public memorial was brief.
"Vince, always have love in my heart for you, man," he said. "Rest in peace."
Paul died on June 22 after reportedly suffering a heart attack in his sleep.
Co-founding Pantera bassist Rex Brown released a tribute to Paul on Thursday, writing that there was no tighter band in the '90s than Pantera. Brown, who was critical of Paul in his 2014 memoir, insisted that Paul was a great friend to him and that he hoped the drummer was resting easy.
"We must remember the great times we shared with him," Brown wrote. "Rest in peace, Vinnie, and give Dime a big ole' fashioned Texas-style hug from all of us. You made an incredible mark on the world and you were taken from us way too soon."
