The summer is to live music what the holidays is to retail. And while England's Nothing But Thieves were as busy as ever, they barely made it through the summer of 2017.
"It was a nightmare, wasn't it?" guitarist Dominic Craik tells Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke, referring to the sequence of maladies that befell the band during festival season.
Craik, bassist Philip Blake and a crew member were stricken with salmonella while touring Europe.
"I was sort of playing the set—I don't know where we were, Spain, Poland or something—and as I was playing guitar, I was unfortunately vomiting into a bucket," Craik recalls. "Didn't miss a note!"
"But then I did, sort of, miss the next seven or eight songs."
Craik got carried away to get an IV and the band continued playing without him. But it's not as if things improved from there. In the next country—while Craik and other team members were sickened with food poisoning—the band's equipment was lost...for the second time that summer.
Later, frontman Conor Mason accidentally stabbed himself in the eye minutes before a show. It was the only gig the band missed, they say.
Despite all of this, the band managed to write a bunch of great new songs on the road and have just released their excellent new album Broken Machine, with the first single being "Sorry." (watch official video below)
