Steve Winwood Says Walter Becker Never Put Down His Guitar Offstage

If there's one thing Steve Winwood remembers about late-Steely Dan co-founder and guitarist Walter Becker, it's that Becker was in love with his guitar and rarely put it down.

That was the case while Winwood and Becker's band Steely Dan toured in the summer of 2016.

Becker passed away on September 3, 2017.

"He was continuously playing guitar," Winwood tells Q104.3 New York's Jonathan Clarke in a new interview. "In his dressing room, offstage, all the time, I mean, he's practicing or whatever he's doing. And then when he was onstage, he seemed to spend a lot of time telling jokes."

Winwood described Becker and Becker's Steely Dan partner, singer Donald Fagen, as being like a "comedy duo," but they could also play music as well as anybody.

"It's a great loss and Steely Dan are a fantastic band and we had a great time touring with them."

Winwood gave the interview to promote his latest album, Greatest Hits Live, an album live rendition of the legendary songwriter's biggest hits—both as a solo artist and with bands like Traffic and Blind Faith—performed with his current band.

You can watch the entire interview below.

Greatest Hits Live is available now. You can get more information here.
