Outlaw Country legend Jessi Colter stopped by "Out of the Box" with guitarist Lenny Kaye to play us some music and talk about her family, her faith and her impressive career.
Colter's memoir, An Outlaw and a Lady, is available everywhere as of April 11. The release of the book coincides with Colter's unique new album, The Psalms, which was produced by Lenny Kaye.
During the interview, the singer/songwriter recalls the famous Highwaymen Tour with Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and her husband Waylon Jennings, and how she kept family together while living on the road for so many years.
Colter is a platinum-selling singer and one of the first and only female stars of the outlaw country movement.
Her new album, The Psalms, is a heartfelt collection of some of Jessi's favorite Bible passages sung and put to music. Kaye says the idea stuck with him after he saw Colter singing the Psalms by herself one day at a piano, while he was visiting. The image stuck with him over the years and sometime after Jennings passed away, Kaye suggested Colter make an album of Psalms.
"I thought it was one of the most beautiful expressions of belief I had ever seen," Kaye said.
The two made time to arrange and record the pieces together over several years and Kaye eventually brought in studio musicians to add to the arrangements and complete the album.
Watch the full interview above! Colter and Kaye perform "Psalm 23: The Lord Is My Shepherd."
