Heart's Nancy Wilson Unveils Cover Of Bruce Springsteen's 'The Rising'

After a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career with Heart, Nancy Wilson is officially a solo artist with the Thursday unveiling of her debut single, a cover of "The Rising" by Bruce Springsteen.

Earlier this week, Wilson told Q104.3 New York's Jim Kerr and Shelli Sonstein that she is "in the midst" of work on the album. There will be another single soon and she expects the full-length to arrive early next year.

She explained that she had the idea to put "The Rising" on her solo album after seeing Springsteen's Broadway show.

"It was so uplifting and moving and funny, everything about it was fantastic and great and depthy. Then he does 'The Rising' live in a different way on that show," she recalled. "I was so taken with those lyrics. The story of the song about the fireman going up the stairs to try to save people in the [Twin] Towers and realize he was not gonna make it so he let his wife know...Just one of the hero kind of moments where it takes you all the way through your own humanity, what's meaningful when people are in peril and souls are leaving the Earth. I just think for now it's another really appropriate moment to sing that song with an aspirational, sort of, slant on it."

Wilson takes "The Rising" on a more rootsy trip than The Boss's symphonic original, accompanied by mandolins and twangy electric guitars.

"The word came back that he really likes it, so I did the Snoopy dance when I heard that," she laughs.

Though Springsteen inspired her to try her hand at one of his songs, she says she's not about to embark on a one-person show herself.

"That's one of the least easy jobs in the world is to go out there all by yourself and conduct the entire show and do all the talking and do all the playing and do all the singing and storytelling. But he's such a pro and an incredible musician all around. It was a kind of life-altering show to see. I knew I had to try and get there and see it 'cause I knew it was going to be a once-in-a-lifetime type deal."
