NASA Scientists Included Tribute to Green Day on Mars InSight Lander

Green Day might be the first punk band to have evidence of its existence travel beyond Earth.

It so happens that NASA scientists working on the agency's InSight Mars Lander included a tribute to the legendary band before launching the robot into space this past spring.

But now that the lander has safely arrived on Mars, we've learned that among the robot's state-of-the-art equipment is a microchip bearing the words "Green Day Since 1986."

While the space agency hasn't commented on why the chip is there, it is certainly a reference to the hit-making pop/punk band.

Green Day celebrated the news that it entered the space age.

"Officially landed on Mars," said the band in a Tweet, before adding the achievement was "Out of this world."

InSight is the eighth lander to successfully arrive on the Red Planet. It will spend two years on Mars near its equator, collecting data that will help researchers learn more about how the planet was formed.

The project cost more that $814 million.
