If New York City truly is the Big Apple, it's probably also rotten inside.
A new survey finds the Greatest City in the World is also the dirtiest.
The report, by cleaning service BusyBee, rated 40 U.S. cities on five categories including: population density, litter, pests, noise and lack of space to come up with the cleanest and dirtiest cities.
New York City rated #1 in three of the five for having the densest population, the most litter and the most pests.
The latter shouldn't come as too big of a surprise, since New Yorkers recently learned that their city is home to two genetically distinct 'uptown' and 'downtown' rat populations.
The runner-up to New York's massive filth index of 427.9 is Los Angeles at a modest (relatively speaking) score of 317.8.
Pix 11 reports New York City's Department of Sanitation has added more trucks and street sweepers in recent years. The city has also expanded its recycling program.
As a result, more than 95 percent of city street met cleanliness standards, as set by the city. But many residents and visitors have their doubts about those standards.
"New York definitely does not meet maybe the high standards that I have for a city to be clean," Stejepan Lukic told Pix11.
