Natalie Portman & Oscar Isaac play a couple from the not-too-distant future who seemingly become the first people to (separately) survive a threat to humankind. The threat isn’t an alien or a monster, but an energy force that looks like a psychedelic shimmer. It’s the rare sci-fi/horror movie that stars a basically all-female cast as the would-be saviors. Among them: Jennifer Jason Leigh; Gina Rodriguez; and Tessa Thompson (who most first saw in the wonderful “Dear White People”). Oscar Isaac is central to the story but isn’t central to the action. The movie is based on a popular trilogy: “The Southern Reach Trilogy”.The movie is gorgeous and very trippy and while the mystery kept going, for the most part, I found lots predictable. You send a squad of 5 into a place where no one but one man every emerged alive…what do you THINK will happen to them ???!!! Plus, I was let down by the payoff. And, I got bored when I wasn’t oohing & ahhing over the effects. It gets 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Do see it on the big screen. Don’t wait for Netflix.
I didn’t see this one. It’s an R-rated comedy starring Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams as a married couple whose weekly game night with friends takes a different turn when his brother joins game night and arranges a murder mystery. It’s a comedy/mystery that gets 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Also a heads up: in honor of what would have been George Harrison’s 75th birthday, the movie “Concert for George” will be in theaters all over the area Tuesday and again March 5th, with performances by Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton,Tom Petty & more.
