Take Me To The Movies: Suburbicon, Thank You For Your Service

posted by Shelli Sonstein -

“Suburbicon”..written by The Coen Bros and George Clooney and the 6th movie directed by Clooney. I didn’t see…but this is the story of a not so perfect 50’s suburbia with deceit, betrayal and racism with Matt Damon, Julianne Moore & Oscar Isaac.  Not getting great reviews. Just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Thank You For Your Service”...based on a true story surviving post-mideast war PTSD & the failings of the VA. Great performance, as usual, from NYU grad Miles Teller & Amy Schumer almost unrecognizable in a small but important role.

Def a 3 star film and 63% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Novitiate”…a coming of ager set in the early 60’s in a NUNNERY. Melissa Leo is a shoo-in as an Oscar nominee. First time writer-director Maggie Betts joins me on “Sonstein Sunday” at 7am  Sunday and on “Sonstein Sessions” on the iHeartRadio app.

3 stars...88% on Rotten Tomatoes

“All I See Is You”...I had such high hopes for this. Blake Lively stars as a blind woman who gets her sight back, upending her  near perfect marriage to a man she never saw before. Some artsy camera work but pretty dull and predictable, though it’s written & directed by Marc Forster, whose “Monster’s Ball” won an Oscar for Halle Berry. I will say Blake Lively  isn’t Blake Lively with darker hair & no makeup. You wouldn’t even recognize her on the street!!

1-and-a-half stars

“The Divine Order”- did you know women in Switzerland didn’t win the right to vote til 1970??!!   NO heavy hand here- this  subtitled movie is funny & sexy and it’s Switzerland’s offering for best foreign film at the Oscars. You can hear my interview with the writer/director on “Sonstein Sessions” on the iHeratRadio app. 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.
