Take Me To The Movies: Mother

“Mother!”… This is unlike any movie I have ever seen. I can’t even categorize it. It’s a thriller.  It’s a love story.  It’s an allegory. And it’s one of the most terrifying movies I have ever seen. Not as in monster-scary, like the clown in “It”. It’s the HUMANS  that make this movie so horrifying. Over the top, crazy, terrifying. Think “Rosemary’s Baby” – but 1-thousand times scarier. There aren’t any real jump out of your seat moments, it’s a different sort of scary- the kind of real nightmares. YOU will not have one relaxed moment for 2 hours. From the very start, it’s ominous and builds to a crescendo.

The movie is all seen through the eyes of the nameless mother, Jennifer Lawrence, who stars as the younger wife of a well know but blocked poet, played by Javier Bardem. Her world starts to go out of control when some strangers show up at their door- the wonderful Ed Harris and as his wife, the sorely missed Michelle Pfeiffer. Just when you think things can’t get crazier, absolute madness sets in - some scenes so violent, it’s hard to look at them.

Jennifer Lawrence and Michelle Pfeiffer are Oscar-good. Kristin Wiig briefly shows up.

“Mother!” can be seen as a horror fairy tale and/or a comment on society. It’ll stay with you. Love it or hate it, this is great filmmaking. It’s completely unique as a horror film and one that MUST be seen on the big screen to get the full impact. Like “Black Swan” and “Requiem for a Dream, Darren Aronofsky is a name we will be hearing come awards season.

Did I like the movie?? It was like a car crash. You don’t want to see it but you can’t look away. It’s an experience!!!! I was just amazed by the creativity.
