Movies: Life, CHiPs, Wilson and more

“Life”

Think “Alien” for a new generation but since it’s close to 40 years later, this one’s not groundbreaking.

Is there life on Mars? These 6 astronauts on the international space station find out there is and then wish there wasn’t. Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds star. There’s nothing new but it’s still an entertaining movie that’ll take you right out of your own life.  I  loved the very twisty end and “Spirit in the Sky” is a perfect accompaniment. Yea!!! No 3D.

“CHiPs”

I didn’t see since the only screening that was offered  was the same time as “Life”.  Dax Shepard wrote/directed and stars in this movie version of the 70’s/80’s TV  show. But it’s not G-rated. Not by a longshot.  It’s a hard R for graphic nudity & language.  Michael Pena co-stars. Dax also hired wife Kristen Bell along with Maya Rudolph and “Law & Order’s” Vincent D’Onofrio. “Variety” says the movie is slumming it. Not getting great reviews.

“Wilson”

Woody Harrelson is Wilson: a lonely, neurotic people-hater who has no filter whatsoever. Wilson reunites with his ex-drug addict wife, played by Laura Dern, and finds a purpose to his life when he discovers they shares a daughter. Woody is the reason to see “Wilson”. Cheryl Hines and Judy Greer have smaller roles.  It has its funny moments  but this is one you  really don’t need  to see in a theater.  Add to your Netflix Queue.

On “Sonstein Sunday”: the director  of “The Zookeeper’s Wife” with Jessica Chastain- which opens next  Friday- a holocaust story most of us never knew.
