Dave Grohl to Auction Instruments Used in "PLAY" Film for Charity

If Dave Grohl's PLAY song and accompanying mini-documentary have any legacy at all, the Foo Fighters frontman wants it to be one of learning.

Grohl was inspired to compose, film and record PLAY after watching his daughters begin to learn music. He says the struggle, obsession and reward of learning a musical instrument is something that has always captivated him.

It's why next week's auction of gear used by Grohl in PLAY dovetails so nicely with the theme of the film and the inspiration for the 23-minute instrumental. Proceeds from the Reverb.com auction of signed gear, beginning Tuesday, October 9, will go towards organizations that help kids learn musical instruments.

Grohl painstakingly recorded each instrument of the piece in one complete take each to mirror the way he — and so many young musicians — learns new music; it you mess up, you start again from the beginning.

The auction starts October 9 and ends October 21.

Since being released on August 9, PLAY has racked up over 2.4 million views on YouTube, along with millions more downloads and streams.

Grohl says the film celebrates the "rewards and challenges of dedicating one's life to playing and mastering a musical instrument."
