Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has offered another hint as to the direction his band went on its forthcoming new album.
Grohl had previously described the new Foos material as "f---ing weird," warning fans that the band's tenth studio album would be a departure.
In a recent conversation with Los Angeles' ALT 98.7, Grohl explained how the nationwide COVID lockdowns spoiled the Foos plans to play some of their new songs on tour.
"It's filled with these anthemic, huge, sing-along rock songs," he said of the new album. "It's weird, because it's almost like a dance record in a weird way — not an EDM, disco, modern dance record. It's got groove, man. To me, it's like our David Bowie's Let's Dance record. that's what we wanted to make, 'cause we were like, 'Let's make this really up, fun record.'"
Let's Dance, released in 1983, was one of Bowie's biggest commercial successes. Bowie and producer Nile Rodgers' embrace of R&B, disco, new wave and contemporary pop music of the day resulted in three of Bowie's best-selling singles ever, "Let's Dance," "Modern Love" and "China Girl."
The title track also famously contains a guitar solo by Stevie Ray Vaughan, who wowed Bowie a year earlier at a music festival in Europe.
Foo Fighters have offered few hints as to when the new album might see the light of day, except that the initial plan was to release it this year.
The band pushed back its 25th anniversary 'Van Tour' of North America to the fall and postponed their European tour until 2021 amid the novel coronavirus crisis.
