Trump Signs Spending Bill After Veto Threat

President Trump averted another government shutdown after he signed a massive $1.3 trillion spending bill despite hinting he would veto the bill over the lack of funding for a border wall earlier in the day. The president said there were "a lot of things I’m unhappy about in this bill," but that he was signing it "as a matter of national security."

The president said that he "looked very seriously" at vetoing the legislation, but ultimately felt that the increase in military spending was enough to get him to sign the bill. The bill will boost military funding by around $60 billion and give soldiers a raise.

The government was set to run out of money at midnight on Friday. The bill will fund the government through September and Trump warned legislators that he would "never sign another bill like this again."

Some members of the Republican party were against the massive bill because it did not follow through on promises to cut funding to Planned Parenthood and so-called "sanctuary cities." Senator Rand Paul was unhappy that the 2000-page bill was crafted by the leadership and given to members of Congress less than 24 hours before they were scheduled to vote on it.
