Mick Fleetwood Talks MusiCares Person of the Year, New Book and More

Fleetwood Mac drummer Mick Fleetwood says the band is deeply honored to be the first-ever group to be named MusiCares Person of the Year due to the band's "extraordinary creative accomplishments" and "significant charitable work."

Fleetwood Mac joins an impressive list of previous honorees, including Tom Petty, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, Carol King, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Barbra Streisand from the past seven years alone.

The drummer tells Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke that the caliber of artist that typically gets this award is incredible, but the award signifies more than just star power.

"Lest we forget, this is about a charity that supports...musicians and people in the music world," Fleetwood says. "They're an incredible organization."

MusiCares is a nonprofit, run by The Recording Academy, that provides health and medical assistance to musicians in need.

"I know personally what is being done here, year in, year out," Fleetwood adds, referring to two musicians he knows who've received much-needed aid from MusiCares.

This year's star-studded award presentation, tribute to Fleetwood Mac and MusiCares fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, January 26, 2018, at Radio City Music Hall.

Performers will include Keith Urban, Miley Cyrus, Zac Brown Band, Lorde, Portugal. The Man, Imagine Dragons, Harry Styles, Allison Krauss and many more.

"The whole story is beyond belief, really," Fleetwood says. "Seeing contemporary artists, and in truth, a really vibrant assembly of young talent coming out and really being unbelievably enthusiastic about performing some of our songs...is again reason to be grateful."
