Stone Temple Pilots have had a lot of ups and downs over the past three decades, and there's a lot to cover.
But when guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz dropped by Q104.3 New York's "Out of the Box" with Jonathan Clarke, they were in the spirit to celebrate their band's storied history and association with two legendary frontmen, original STP singer Scott Weiland and Linkin Park's Chester Bennington.
Core, STP's 1992 debut, broke the rock world wide open, going eight times platinum and eventually winning the band a Grammy for the song "Plush."
DeLeo and Kretz recalled the origin of the strange vocal effect on the album's opening track, "Dead & Bloated." And how bassist Robert DeLeo and Weiland wrote the song "Creep" while on break at work.
Robert was working at a guitar shop on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Weiland was working across the street, Dean says.
"Scott's job was to drive models to their shoots," Dean laughs.
"That was the one job he never got fired from," Kretz adds. "He was a bike messenger, got hit the first day. It's like there's so many jobs that he just couldn't hold on to. This one, yeah he really cherished that one."
So when Robert and Scott had downtime, they would get together and play.
"They would sit out back and Robert had a big, big Buick Wildcat or something. You know the back seat in that thing was like a couch. So that's where they did a lot of the writing for that record."

The 25th anniversary Super Deluxe edition of Core includes four CDs with a remastered version of the original album, plus hours of demos and live material, including the band's performance on MTV Unplugged.
