Roger Goodell Signs Massive 5-Year Extension

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is signing a contract extension to remain in his position through 2024. ESPN reports the five-year deal is expected pay Goodell about $40-million per year. Goodell has served as commissioner of the league since 2006, earning more than $200-million in that time.

Despite the big numbers, there is a chance the Goodell does not see all that money. The ESPN report says that "85 percent of the total potential compensation package is from bonuses, which would be subject to ownership approval and validation." The NFL has seen TV ratings and stadium attendance drop in the past few seasons as fans have become upset with players kneeling during the national anthem and the revelations about CTE and the toll the sport takes on players' health after they retire.

If Goodell is unable to right the ship and get fans to start tuning in, the owners could vote to deny him some of the bonus money.
