As if trying to remember one Valentine's Day isn't enough. A NJ Assemblyman wants to add a second one in August. Calling it "Half Valentine's Day", he feels that a second day to celebrate love will help businesses who were affected by the rolling snow storms the north east experienced this winter.
So there we have it. NJ's only honest politician. He admits that "Half Valentine's Day" is just to get people to spend money on commercialism. Not to mention that the state gets a cut of the sales taxes.
But there's nothing new about this.
Let me take you back to 1998 on an episode of The Simpsons. Sales were slumping during the summer months and the local department store wanted to get the people of Springfield to spend more money on "gifts, cards, and assorted gougables". So they invented a new holiday: Love Day.
The head of Costingtons called the name Love Day "lame", but that was the best the boardroom came up with. Which is about half as much thought as the Assemblyman put into "Half Valentine's Day".
Anyway, hop on to the way back machine and watch the scene. BTW, U2 appeared in this episode.
