It's official, NYC's World Trade Center is the nation's tallest building. 1 World Trade Center Tower in Manhattan beat out Chicago's Willis Towers, formerly known as the Sears Tower, in a ruling by the Height Committee of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

The World Trade Center's official height of 1,776 feet was brought into question when debate opened up over whether or not the needle on top of the building should be considered a part of the structure.

Without counting the needle, the World Trade Center would have stood at 1,368 feet tall, which would have made it the second tallest structure in the country behind the Willis Towers, which stands at 1,4500 feet tall.

1 World Trade Center, which will officially be designated the tallest building in the country, is set to open in January.
