Public Advocate Letitia James is proposing a pilot program that would require some NYPD officers wear body cameras.
James wants the program to focus in areas where there are rates of high crime and police misconduct. She said 15 percent of officers would wear the cameras at an expense of $5 million.
She called it a win-win situation for the public, because it would reduce payouts for police misconduct and exonerate innocent officers accused of wrongdoing.
To expand the program to cover the entire police force, the cost to taxpayers would be $32 million.
