(John Del Signore) As part of an effort to help small businesses in Red Hook still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, the city has announced free ferry service to the neighborhood on weekends this summer. The free ferry, which will paid for by the city and through a partner sponsorship from Fairway Market, will operate between Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan to a new stop at an existing, currently unused ferry landing at Van Brunt Street, and then on to IKEA and back. This second ferry boat will double the frequency of trips on weekends, with ferries running every 25 minutes.
Service will run from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend (Saturday, May 25th) through Labor Day weekend, including the Mondays of Memorial Day and Labor Day (Monday, September 2nd). "Hurricane Sandy hit the Red Hook community hard, and that’s why we’re making it easier than ever for New Yorkers to get to small businesses in the area in order to help the community continue to recover,” said Mayor Bloomberg.
