Police are arresting more people for not paying the subway fare.
A Daily News analysis finds that fare-beating busts have surged by 69 percent over a 5 year period. In 2008 there were 14,681arrests, compared to 24,747 in 2013.
That’s led to an increasing number of people serving jail time for skipping the subway fare. The state Division of Criminal Justice Services reports that between 2008 and the first half of this year, nearly 37,500 people received sentences for fare invasion that included time behind bars.
The MTA says fare evasion costs up to $100 million a year.
