Governor Andrew Cuomo is in Israel today, leading a group of New York lawmakers on the trip. The visit is designed to show solidarity with Israel.
“It’s important to make our commitment to Israel clear and it’s important to make that commitment clear now,” said Cuomo.
Before boarding a flight at Kennedy Airport, Cuomo said they will stand with Israel and support its right to defend itself.
Violence has plagued Gaza in recent weeks, with Hamas launching attacks on Israel. In response, Israel has used ground troops to destroy tunnels controlled by Hamas.
“Everyone wants the killing to stop, there is no doubt,” Cuomo said. “But at the same time, Israel must have the right to defend itself.”
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver joined the governor for the trip, along with Senate co-leaders Dean Skelos and Jeff Klein.
